First Time

It’s too early to wake myself up
It’s too late to stay in bed
It’s my first time trying to decide if I’m out of my mind
Or just stuck in my head
It’s my first night sleeping with the window
Wide open, I hear every noise
The choir of sidewalk strays
incessantly plays out until dawn quiets its voice
It’s my first time noticing a new moon
And I'm wondering what it’s showed me before
But I smile and wave, laughing my confusion away
And close my eyes to sleep a little bit more
I got older overnight it seems
My bedding is covered in frost
I exhale air, the cloud of cold breath goes nowhere
Like a truck blowing out its exhaust
It’s too early to wake myself up now
It’s too late to stay in bed
It’s my first time trying to decide if I’m out of my mind
Or just stuck in my head
